Care Home Open Week 2021: Kirstien makes an art of it

30th June 2021

This week we’re celebrating Care Home Open Week and although we can’t invite people into our care homes easily right now, we’re sharing stories to highlight what it’s like to live in care at Whiteley.

We want all our residents to live happy and fulfilling lives and our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to providing fun and stimulating activities to suit different tastes and abilities. The arts and crafts sessions are always very popular but can be more difficult for those with limited mobility or who are unable to sit up to a table.

Kirstien Duester, Activities Coordinator at our nursing home, the Eliza Palmer Hub was therefore delighted when she found these fabulous wooden desk top easels in The Works which have made painting and drawing sessions more accessible for many of our residents.

Kirstien said, “These easels are brilliant and sit perfectly on the little tables we fit across residents’ easy chairs. They’re nice and light and can be easily positioned in front of them, making drawing and painting so much easier – and we’ve used them for doing puzzles too.

“Arts and crafts are helpful for those in care in so many ways. By encouraging residents to be creative it really stimulates them and we always have lots of fun. It’s also a relaxing activity and has helped people cope better with the anxieties we’ve all had to face over the last 18 months or so.”
