From money pots to flowerpots

25th June 2021

Most of us will be familiar with the gardening metaphors about good financial planning – growing our investment ‘pots’, ‘sowing’ our money ‘seeds’ (or maybe ‘weeding’ out those bad spending habits…!), but members of our Finance Team turned the metaphor on its head this week by doing some real planting!

Organised by Head of Finance, Ishwant Basra, members of the team decided to make their team building session a bit more fun and rewarding by helping residents at one of our care homes, Ingram House, to create some beautiful pots and planters for their patio garden.

Ishwant said: “I love gardening myself and find it really therapeutic. My father and father-in-law are both in their 80s and have found gardening a good pass time, especially during lockdown. They’ve planted so many flowers and vegetables over the years and I’ve learnt a lot from them.

“I thought it would be good for the team to get out of the office and do something different, so it was lovely to do our team building outside in the sunshine while helping residents. They all got their gardening gloves on too and we had lots of fun together. A big thank you to our Estates Team for donating the plants and compost and to the team at Ingram House for helping us get everything organised.”

Payroll and Finance Assistant, Karen Watson said: “In our line of work we obviously know lots of residents by name but rarely get the opportunity to meet them in person and especially since the pandemic, so it was really nice to see them face to face. We had a brilliant time getting muddy in the garden, and it was lovely to see their faces when we lined up all the beautiful pots we’d planted! It was a very special afternoon and we all felt we’d made a difference too.”
