Happy Founder’s Day !
29th September 2020
On 29th September each year we remember the birthday of our founder and benefactor William Whiteley so, on behalf of all our residents living at Whiteley Village and all those who work for the Whiteley Homes Trust we wish you and all those who support our charity, a very Happy Founder’s Day!
As part of the celebrations, every resident receives a small gift from the Trust as specified in William Whiteley’s will and we also hold a Founder’s Day service on the Sunday nearest the 29th in our Village church, St Mark’s. This year, villagers received their gifts but due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the current restrictions around Church services we were unable to hold our traditional service. So, with a huge effort from members of staff and residents we put together a virtual service which you can watch by clicking on this link Many thanks to all those who organised the video and took part.
Part of the service each year also includes the Founder’s Day Awards, which the Trust organises to show our gratitude to those who contribute most to our community and recognise their kindness and commitment to their fellow residents. Residents are nominated by other villagers and our staff, and three cups are awarded:
- The Trustees Cup: Presented by our Chairman, Rod Bennion to the resident who has made an outstanding contribution to the social elements of the Village
2020 Winner – Barry Peters: Barry has been instrumental in setting up a monthly supper club and during lockdown he has continued to use his skills to help other residents by cooking takeaway meals.
- The Community Cup: Presented by our CEO, Rachel Hill to the resident who has made an outstanding contribution to Village life
2020 Winner – Gill Lindley: Gill has worked hard in the charity shop to make improvements and provide much needed income for the welfare fund. During lockdown she has helped her neighbours with their gardening and has planned and prepared for the safe reopening of the charity shop.
- The Care Cup: Presented by Trustee, Dr Beverly Castleton to the resident who has made an outstanding contribution to residents living within Ingram House, the Eliza Palmer Hub or Huntley House
2020 Winner – Beryl Slingo: Beryl takes library books to those residents in our care areas who aren’t able to go to the Village library themselves. She has continued to do this through lockdown, delivers the books whatever the weather and carefully makes the choices as she has got to know the readers so well.
We hope you enjoy the service and many congratulations to all our worthy winners!
