In Touch – July

14th July 2022

In this month’s In Touch newsletter read the inspiring story of one of our residents, Phyllis Rowland, who celebrated her 100th birthday recently, and turned her skills as a machinist making parachutes in WW2 to creating designer fashion in the decades afterwards.

This amazing lady was the epitome of a modern, independent woman over 80 years ago – forging a career for herself to support the war effort, and successfully taking her fellow female workforce out on strike for fairer pay at a time when most considered a woman’s place to be in the home.

Aside from some wonderful stories, older people also have a great deal of knowledge and experience to share with the younger generation, and young people can create so much fun and vitality for them, so we’ve worked hard to maintain our charity’s intergenerational links with local schools, colleges and youth groups through the pandemic. We were very grateful to the talented and generous students of St George’s College for their support this summer – entertaining our residents and working hard on some community projects here at Whiteley Village.

Read more about their efforts, Phyllis’ story and much more news from The Whiteley Homes Trust in this month’s In Touch.
