The Eliza Palmer Hub Nursing Home
7th September 2023
The purpose of The Whiteley Homes Trust is to provide specialist housing for older people of limited means. Yet within our beautiful almshouse village setting we also have the Eliza Palmer Hub, a care home providing personalised nursing care to villagers and self-funding residents, with proceeds from the self-funding residents supporting the work of our charity for the benefit of the Whiteley Village community.
The Eliza Palmer Hub was named after the very first resident to move into Whiteley Village in October 1917. Miss Eliza Palmer, who herself was a retired nurse, took occupancy of 96 Octagon Road on Wednesday 10 October 1917, and the naming of our new Nursing Home in 2019 was a fitting recognition of her place in the history of the Whiteley Village almshouse community.
With 30 spacious care suites, located over two floors, the Eliza Palmer Hub sits in the heart of Whiteley Village and is very much part of the Village with residents encouraged, and enabled, to participate as fully as they wish to in community life.
Residents receive an assessment of care, to identify their needs and dependency level for nursing support, but that is not all that we are interested in. We also find out about residents’ interests and hobbies, and how they like to spend their time, so that we get to know each one as an individual, and use that information to write person centered care plans and do all we can to ensure that they live fulfilling lives in the Eliza Palmer Hub.
Our highly skilled nursing and care team operate within a homely environment where we even have an open plan communal kitchen/dining area where residents can make their own drinks, as they would at home, should they choose to do so. Each room has its own kitchenette area with a fridge, a sink and cupboards for food and snacks.
Inspected and rated Good by the Quality Care Commission in 2022 Eliza Palmer Hub is recognised to be:
• Safe
• Effective
• Caring
• Responsive
• Well-led
We encourage family and friends to visit at any time, and recognise the importance of this social interaction to the wellbeing of our residents. In addition we offer a range of activities and entertainment tailored to the needs of our residents and, if they wish, we encourage residents to participate in community events, particularly those held in the Lantern Café within the Hub.
Our dedicated team of volunteer befrienders work with us to provide company and the stimulation of someone from outside of the Hub to chat with. Many of those volunteers come from within Whiteley Village, with one volunteer saying:
We also have an onsite hairdressing salon within the Eliza Palmer Hub, and a very pretty, courtyard garden with raised pots for those with mobility issues. The rooms have balcony views from the first floor and direct ground floor access, where the residents often like to sit and take in the fresh air, chat with friends and family and enjoy the tranquil setting.

We understand the challenges that families can face when caring for a loved one, and for that reason, we also offer respite and taster stays at the Eliza Palmer Hub, giving visiting residents the chance to experience life at Whiteley Village.
